About the Event
India has long been seen as a nation difficult to trade with. Despite the Modi government’s fervent denials, its ’Make in India’ campaign was widely viewed as protectionist, further solidifying that reputation. India’s last minute withdrawal from the world’s largest free trade agreement (RCEP) left observers baffled both outside and within India. Experts fretted about what seemed like India veering into isolation, just as the rest of Asia was becoming more integrated. However either the doomsayers may have misread the situation or the Indian government has heeded their concerns. There seems to be a newfound enthusiasm for trade agreements. After concluding FTA with UAE in record time, India is now fast tracking its negotiations with Australia, UK and EU. What seems to be going on? Has India finally overcome its fear of foreign trade?
