SYNOPSIS:

American hegemony in the global order has been formidably challenged in recent years by China. Beijing’s wolf-warrior diplomacy, its geopolitical advancements in the Indian Ocean, the Belt and Road Initiative and its leadership in the formation of the landmark RCEP reveal its aspiration to modify the global system to its advantage. Washington however is determined to not let China do as it pleases. For instance, recent AUKUS and Quad formations by the US, it’s extension of support to Taiwan, all form a direct counter to China’s footprints in the Indo-Pacific. The US and China have also clashed on a number of trade related issues in recent years, disrupting global supply chains, and creating an air of mistrust. Their hard-nosed maneuvers in technology, military, nuclear and economic spheres are a rising cause of concern for the global community.

Some argue that recent events point to a ‘New Cold War' of the 21st century between the US and China, while others dismiss the theory as far-fetched, and state there is ample room for cooperation between the two superpowers. In this volatile scenario, with both nations refusing to budge, the probability of a larger confrontation between the two looms larger than ever before. With Asia emerging as the theatre of this conflict, countries like India also confront a dilemma: whether to take sides or to stay neutral. The decline of American power in world politics has been a favorite prediction of many experts, will it become a reality now with China’s rise?

Does China wish to end the US led Global order? Is China's aggression merely because of its 'middle-kingdom complex' or does China have a larger game plan? What does the intensified discord between the great powers indicate for the rest of the world? Can the US adapt to a new world order which is not unipolar with itself at the helm? Moreover, can a Cold war be avoided in a bi-polar world?

Join us, as we deep dive into the intricacies of the conflict between the US and China and try to understand what role India can play.
